Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and rural areas, together with the National Health Commission and the General Administration of market supervision and administration, issued a new edition of "national standards for food safety, maximum residue limits of pesticides in food. ". The maximum residue limits (mrls) of 564 pesticides in 376 food products are 10092, completed the State Council approved "to speed up the improvement of China's pesticide residue standard system" in the pesticide residue standards to reach 10,000 tasks.
The new edition of the standard has four major features. First, the number of pesticide varieties covered and the limit increased substantially. Compared with the 2019 edition, the new edition of the standards includes 81 pesticides, an increase of 16.7% ; 2,985 pesticide residue limits, an increase of 42% ; and nearly twice as many pesticides and their limits as the Codex Alimentarius standards, comprehensive coverage of approved pesticide varieties and major plant-derived agricultural products in China. Second, it embodies the "four strictest" requirements. The limits of 792 banned pesticides and 345 restricted pesticides were set for 29 banned pesticides, and 5,766 residue limits were revised for vegetables, fruits and other fresh food products of high social concern, accounting for 57.1% of the total limit at present In order to strengthen the supervision of imported agricultural products, 1742 residue limits of 87 pesticides not registered for use in China have been set. Third, the standard-setting is more scientific and rigorous and in line with international practice.
The new standard is based on China's pesticide registration residue test, market monitoring, residents'dietary consumption, pesticide toxicology and other data, and carries out risk assessment in accordance with the prevailing CAC practice, the opinions of experts, the public, relevant departments and institutions and other stakeholders were widely solicited, and the comments of members of the World Trade Organization were accepted. The risk assessment principles, methods, data and other requirements adopted by the CAC and developed countries. Fourth, the pesticide residue limit detection methods to speed up the improvement. At the same time, the three departments also issued the national standards for food safety, the determination of 331 pesticides and their metabolites residues in food of plant origin, and the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (lc-ms) and other four standards for the detection of pesticide residues, the problem of "limited quantity and no method" for some pesticide residue standards has been effectively solved.
The new version of the standards will go into effect on 2021.
